Broaden representation on the Steering Committee

As the subcommittees take on their tasks, and the Steering Committee develops a clearer understanding of the issues and concerns of the community, it may be helpful to broaden representation on the Steering Committee. For example, you may decide that because a number of people with mental illness encountering police in your community are Veterans, it is essential to work with an array of veteran service providers. It's also possible that the Steering Committee will notice that a large number of the people with mental illness encountering police are on probation or parole, suggesting it would be helpful to work with probation and parole agencies. Some of the groups you may wish to include are:

  • Corrections departments
  • Probation and parole agencies
  • Fire and emergency medical services,
  • Children and youth service providers
  • Substance abuse providers
  • Developmental and intellectual disabilities service providers
  • Service providers for older adults
  • Veterans service providers
  • Tribal leaders
  • Homeless service providers
