Coordinate training logistics

The Steering Committee should designate an individual to take the lead in coordinating the training week. This individual is often the law enforcement CIT coordinator, but this role can also be filled by any dedicated individual within the partner organizations. This individual can call on others to help with logistics. He or she should ensure that the following tasks are completed:

  • Identifying a local site for training, often the law enforcement training academy or a public facility such as a high school. The training site should also have ample space to accommodate scenario-based verbal de-escalation training.
  • Provide refreshments
  • If interested in using the Virtual Hallucination program, contact your local Janssen representative to arrange for access to the equipment several weeks in advance.
  • Identify a graduation speaker, typically an advocate or community leader.
  • Print and assemble course materials and graduation certificates.
  • Develop an evaluation form to measure the quality of the training and track what officers are learning.
  • If necessary, arrange accommodations for presenters who may be traveling a significant distance to the training.

Perspectives: Many of the needs for the CIT training should be met through in-kind donations from the partner organizations or other community groups. For details, read NAMI's resource, The Cost of CIT.
